Summer Splash 04 – Portugal

The 2nd Summer Splash 04 – Portugal, was a weekend to remember. With fantastic weather forecasted and the grounds in splendid condition the anticipation of all players was a hive of excitement.

Thursday and Friday saw teams from England arriving and settling into the superb facilities of Browns Sports and Leisure Club. After the Captains Briefing the referees broke the ice and got things kicked off in the bar on the Karaoke; I wouldn’t recommend anyone to leave there day-jobs just yet, but it never ceases to amaze me that for an instant karaoke just add alcohol…

With anticipation high for a great Saturday tournament teams gather on the main pitch for the general briefing, photos and start of the weekends event. The fields were in perfect condition and the blue skies hinted at the heat that would be on show that afternoon.

Six teams battled it out on a sunny day to make the playoffs; with the sun shining, beer flowing and music pumping the atmosphere was what would be expected of the sunny Algarve. In the evening, teams enjoyed a great BBQ dinner and the party continued to the wee hours of the morning with a few people ending up in the pool.

Sunday started as it meant to go on - with the sand tournament being a much talked about human killer of fitness and stamina. It was now time for some fun on the sand and despite the moans and groans from the aching muscles of the previous day, everyone really enjoyed the sand tournament with some great diving touchdowns.

A bit of light hearted fun before the ¼’s, semi and finals proved to be a great way for everyone to chill out and recover from the night before.

The main tournament playoffs got underway in the mid afternoon heat; the competition was outstanding and was a hard fought battle to the end.
After such an active weekend, everyone was looking forward to the Gala dinner and to unwind with a few drinks. The dinner was a great event with a lot of acknowledgments to the great facilities, level of participation and spirit of the game.

The following official awards were announced at the dinner (the unofficial ones will be left to the memories):

Beach Winners – ACME
Beach Runners-up – IRIE
Main Tournament Winners – ACME
Main Tournament Runners-up – MANIACS
Best Female Player – STACEY VACHER
Best Male Player – SAM GARLICK
Best Referee – ANDREA TOFFA
Big thanks go to the Officials and Referees (Kirsten, Craig, Greg, Lawrence, Andrea, Stu and Mark)
This tournament certainly lived up to all of the expectations of the organisers and players and is fast becoming the weekend tournament in Europe
So for enjoy the northern hemisphere winter and looking forward to seeing you all again at the next one!!
